Kitten Socialisation

The socialisation period in a kitten’s life is the period when they learn what is “normal” for their lives, both what is fun and safe, and what is scary and worth avoiding. For kittens, the optimal socialisation period is 7 - 8 weeks of age. This optimum time has often passed before many homes have even brought home their new kitten but, even if you don’t get the opportunity to maximise the use of the best socialisation period, you can still take time to introduce your kitten to lots of new events. Always remember to show patience as they work through many experiences life will throw at them!

+ How it can help

A well socialised kitten is less anxious, more friendly, bolder and far more used to normal life events than a poorly socialised kitten. This doesn’t mean a poorly socialised cat can’t be a great pet, they will just take much longer to accept new experiences, or people, as safe.

Despite the probability the optimum time will be over, you can still help your kitten develop from the moment they get home. The rule of thumb is, the more you can expose your kitten to in a safe and controlled way, the more accepting they will be as they mature. When introducing something new and your kitten looks unsure or fearful, be sure to act normally until they are no longer worried. They will look to you on how to behave, so if you are being “weird” they will interpret that as a need to be cautious at this event too. Such activities could include:

  • Meeting lots of people, and don’t forget to include children!
  • Playing noises off the internet such as thunder, fireworks etc.
  • Travelling in the cat carrier to new places
  • Visiting the vet so we aren’t always associated with sharp needles!!

Support from our qualified team will be hugely important in helping you stay focused on what is important and your goals for helping your pup develop.

Our team are brimming with experience and able to support and guide you and your kitten on their development journey. Key to having your kittens and cats being healthy is being comfortable with visiting the vet, so the more we see you, the better it is for them!

+ What conditions does it help with?

Good socialising helps with all manner of potential problems including:

  • Less stress
  • Less aggression
  • Kinder with people
  • Fewer noise phobias (e.g. fireworks or vacuum cleaners)
  • More enjoyable trips to the vet…!

+ How long does the treatment take?

Advisory visits with our nurses can be as long or as short as you like. Generally, many short visits are better than one long one. Not only do you get short, bite size bits of information, but you also expose your kitten to many enjoyable trips to the practice, two benefits for one action!

+ How many visits are required?

Kitten and cat behaviour is a huge subject and whilst one visit may be able to give you general advice points, to understand your challenges and offer bespoke advice, several trips will be needed.

+ How much does it cost?

The best way to maximise the effectiveness of our advice is to join one of our wellness subscriptions. For kittens, our nursing packages are great. You can visit our qualified nurses as often as you need to understand all you want and should you need to see the vet, they can internally refer you for a reduced consultation fee! Best of everything!
