Pet of the Month! Molly!

Her Story

Molly is a 17 year old domestic short hair cat that we have been seeing in practice since late 2022 who was diagnosed with diabetes. Molly’s current owner adopted her on Bonfire Night 2022.  She was 16, and her owner at the time was terminally ill. Her current owner knew she had a wobbly walk (cerebellar hypoplasia) but her diabetes was not diagnosed until she had been with them for a little while.

Molly is on our Gold Wellness Subscription & due to her condition we do see her at least a couple of times each month.

We asked Molly’s owner a few questions about Molly, and how they have found looking after her since her diagnosis.

1.      What is Molly’s Favourite thing to do?

At Molly’s age, she does what most elderly cats do:

Eat and Sleep.  She does like cat watching though, when our other cat and visiting cats walk past her living/sleeping area.

2.    What do you enjoy about Molly?

She is gentle and relaxed (except when having her claws trimmed!) and has a determination to keep moving, albeit at quite a slow pace.

3.     How have you adapted to Molly’s condition?

We have had to establish a solid routine to take account of her age and needs. This has involved:

  • Keeping a record of her insulin injections so that she receives her medication at the right time.

  • Changing her litter to corn litter, as the regular litters were sticking to her paws and solidifying. (Diabetic cats wee a lot!)

  • Topping up her food and water bowls as often as possible.

4.     Did you research further into Molly’s diagnosis?

Yes, we have looked at veterinary articles so that we can gain a better understanding of her condition. Also, James is always happy to answer any questions we have during our regular consultations.

5. How does the Wellness Subscription help?

The Gold Wellness Subscription has saved us a tremendous amount of money. Molly has regular consultations, which are free on the subscription, plus regular discounted medication.

6. What advice would you give to others?

If your existing pet develops diabetes, or any other condition, you will receive excellent support from the veterinary team.

If you are thinking of adopting another pet, do look at the elderly rescues, especially those with special needs.  They have a lot of affection to give, and it is very rewarding to make their twilight years happy ones.
