Pet of the Month! Clemmie!

Clemmie is a 13-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with Myxomatous mitral valve disease, this means she has progressive mitral valve degeneration, something very common for the breed unfortunately. Clemmie’s owners have had many Cavalier King Charles Spaniels so are very familiar with the conditions to look out for. Clemmie is on our Gold Wellness Subscription so we do see her on a regular basis and she recently had a cardiac workup with our vet Kat; thankfully her condition appears to be stable.

We asked Clemmie’s owners a few questions about Clemmie, and how they have found looking after her since her diagnosis.

1.      What is Clemmie’s favourite thing to do?

Her most favourite thing is rolling in the fields when we take her for a walk in the morning. Clemmie also loves her food and will bark for a treat! We also take her with us to pet shops and dog friendly restaurants, which she loves as well as the car rides!

2.    Has anything changed with Clemmie’s since her diagnosis?

Not at all, the only thing she does is sleep a lot, but that could also be due to her age!

3.     How have you adapted to her diagnosis?

We haven’t had to make many adjustments for Clemmie, we just know with her condition she can’t go on very long walks, but Clemmie does have a little run in the fields every morning.

4.     What is your favourite thing about Clemmie?

There are so many things about her that we love, she likes to come and sit on the settee between us and take turns going to each of us, giving the best cuddles. We also love how she will come and watch us do our hair and get ready. We really are lucky with her.

5. Do you have any advice for other people for pets with the same condition?

We do see people with older Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, and we just say to be aware of changes like a new cough or different breathing patterns, and it’s best to get them regularly checked by the vets just to be safe.
