How can it help?

Blood tests are an essential tool when investigating the health of your pet because organ function cannot always be evaluated by touch and looking alone.   There is usually not “one test” to identify a problem and so a series of blood tests may be needed. Navigating what test is needed can be complex and so we aim to make sure all options and benefits are discussed with you before submitting any samples for analysis.

As a baseline, we recommend an annual blood test for all pets to evaluate internal organ function. Older pets, pets with specific diseases, or pets on certain medication will need tests more regularly, and in this we can decide when to take these samples in your Annual Health Plan.

What conditions does it help with?

A blood test can be used in many situations such as:

  • Annual general health screen for organ health.

  • Pre-anaesthetic blood screen for anaesthetic risks.

  • Disease investigations to help inform where is affected.

  • Monitoring treatment effects.

  • Monitoring medication levels and adjusting doses accordingly.

How long does it take to get a blood sample?

A blood sample can be taken at the time of a consultation. In some cases we may require your pet to be admitted to our clinic so we can take the sample at the optimum time.

How long do results take to come back?

Basic blood tests will often be reportable within 24 hours, whilst other more complex tests take longer.

Will you ring me with the results?

We prefer to discuss results in person. Where possible we will book a follow up consultation to discuss results and recheck your pet.
