Neutering

Neutering is known as castration for males, and spaying for females. Neutering your pet provides many benefits, including preventing unwanted pregnancies.   In all cases the procedure is carried out on site and requires a general anaesthetic for the surgery in our dedicated operating theatre.

How can it help?

At James Horner Vets we recommend routine neutering. Neutering our pets has many benefits from preventing unwanted pregnancies to reducing the risk of, and preventing, certain cancers. Despite these generalised benefits, we acknowledge not every patient would be a candidate for neutering, and there are other methods for creating the same effect without a surgery. Cat and dog needs and timings for surgeries differ, so please contact us to find out about your own pet.

What conditions does it help with?

Neutering can help with the below:

  • Unwanted pregnancies

  • Prevent pyometra

  • Prevent ovarian cancer

  • Reduce mammary cancer

  • Prevent testicular cancer

  • Reduce spraying (Tom cats)

  • Others - come and find out more

HOW LONG DOES THE TREATMENT TAKE?

A neutering procedure is a day case, with the majority of patients being admitted in the morning and going home in the evening.

HOW MANY VISITS ARE REQUIRED?

Following the surgery we routinely check our patients a minimum of twice to ensure healing is progressing as expected.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

See our price list for our most up to date pricing. If any complications occur following surgery, these will be managed and treated independently with an additional cost.
