Pet Euthanasia

Putting your pet to sleep when the time is right can be the most humane, loving and caring decision you will make for your pet. It is normal to have mixed feelings about euthanasia. At James Horner Vets, we will all support you and your pet through the difficult time.

Can I be with my pet?

Being present, or not being present, with your pet is a very personal decision. If you would like to be with your pet then, if possible, we will make sure everything is in place to allow this to happen.

If you do not wish to be present then this is equally understandable. We treat all pets with the utmost care and dignity so you can be assured they will have the best care we can give them until the end.

What will happen during my pet’s euthanasia?

We will put your pet to sleep by using an overdose of a strong anaesthetic agent.  We always place a cannula before giving the anaesthetic so your pet only feels the sharp scratch of one needle.

If you have decided to be with your pet then we will place the cannula away from you in our prep area.  Once the cannula is placed you will then be able to hold your pet and all we need is access to the injection port.

We then administer the injection. The injection works quickly.  Your pet will feel the same experiences as if going for an anaesthetic and gently relax before going unconscious.  Once asleep the injection will slowly shut down the body until the last reflexes fade. This normally takes about 30 seconds.

We always check your pet’s heart has stopped beating to be certain everything has gone smoothly.

Sometimes relaxation of the body leads to your pet wetting themselves, or a few last breaths.  This is normal and we will always clean and dry your pet to make sure they have a dignified goodbye.

What happens once my pet has been put to sleep?

Once your pet has been put to sleep then you have several options. You are able to take your pet home with you to bury in a special place or you may have them cremated. You can read a Step by Step guide here.

If you choose to have your pet cremated, you can choose to do this through our cremation specialist - Meadow View Cremations or organise the cremation yourself.

May I have their ashes returned to me?

Yes, if organised through us and our partner Meadow View Cremations, you will have the ashes returned to you after 5 days. There are many options from scatter boxes through to bespoke urns or caskets.  We have samples for you to see if you need any help deciding.

Grieving for your pet

Grieving for the loss of a pet is different for everyone and can be a very difficult time. There is no set pattern for grief and feelings can include a mixture of sadness, confusion, shock, anger, guilt, self-doubt, relief, denial and even depression. Your emotions may include all or none of these feelings listed and will be felt in different combinations and intensities.

There’s plenty of help available for recently bereaved pet owners. Whether it's an online support group, dedicated helplines or a caring member of your vet team, don’t be afraid to speak to someone to help ease the situation.

An example you could explore is outlined on the Blue Cross - Pet bereavement support service

The Pet Bereavement Support Service offers confidential support, understanding and practical information for pet owners and others in contact with animals through its free telephone (0800 096 6606, open 08:30 to 20:30 every day)

HOW LONG DOES THE TREATMENT TAKE?

A euthanasia consultation will take about 40 minutes. We will not rush you away, so you will have as long as you need with your pet before leaving.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

This is dependent upon the pet size and choice of cremation. Prices varying between £100-400.
